These black cypress trees grow to be 1000 years old. The youngest trees on the lake are 100 years old, because in order for the seed to sprout they need a dry period of 6 months, now the water in the lake is regulated so it never drops low enough for more trees to start up.
Most of the lake is fairly shallow, so back in the 1800s canals were dug through it so that trade could flow though in the area, mostly logging and cotton transportation to the red river.
It was 103 degrees and the lake was quite humid, the kids had a melt down, below is the calm after the storm, so to speak.
There are alligators in both the pictures below, can you see them?

In the end we got to eat gators, crawfish, mystery meat sausage, and swampy gumbo, and got us free case of Louisiana bum fire afterwards....good trip.
